Usage tips
Word composition
The word consists of 'Wetter' (weather) and 'Vorhersage' (forecast). 'Vorhersage' itself comes from 'vorher sagen' (to say beforehand) and means to announce something future. So it is literally a 'forecast of the weather.'
EXAMPLE
Die Wettervorhersage für die Alpen ist oft unsicher.
The weather forecast for the Alps is often uncertain.
Typical verbs
You can 'lesen' (read) a weather forecast in the newspaper, 'hören' (hear) it on the radio, or 'ansehen' (watch/view) it on television or online. If the forecast is correct, you say that the weather forecast 'stimmt' (is right).
EXAMPLE
Ich habe die Wettervorhersage für morgen noch nicht gehört.
I haven't heard the weather forecast for tomorrow yet.
Sentence structure with 'laut'
To refer to the weather forecast, the preposition 'laut' (according to) is very often used with the dative. The phrase 'Laut der Wettervorhersage ...' (According to the weather forecast ...) often comes at the beginning of the sentence.
EXAMPLE
Laut der Wettervorhersage soll es morgen regnen.
According to the weather forecast, it is supposed to rain tomorrow.

Wettervorhersage vs Prognose
prognosis / forecast
'die Prognose' and 'die Wettervorhersage' are similar because both make a statement about the future. However, 'Prognose' is more general and can refer to many topics, for example the economy, health, or traffic. 'Wettervorhersage' refers only to the future weather in a place or region. The words can be confused because a weather forecast is also a type of forecast. If it is only about rain, sun, or temperature, 'Wettervorhersage' sounds more natural.
Wettervorhersage
Vor der Wanderung schauen wir immer die Wettervorhersage an.
Before the hike, we always check the weather forecast.
Prognose
Die Prognose für den Arbeitsmarkt sieht im Herbst etwas besser aus.
The forecast for the job market looks a little better in the fall.
