One of the days from Monday to Friday, as opposed to the weekend (Saturday and Sunday). Synonymous with 'Werktag' (working day).
example
On a normal weekday, I have to get up at six o'clock.
Usage tips
Compound structure
'Wochentag' (weekday / day of the week) is made up of 'die Woche' (week) and 'der Tag' (day). The '-n-' in the middle is a linking element that connects the two words.
EXAMPLE
Montag ist mein liebster Wochentag.
Monday is my favorite day of the week.
Context clue
The word has two meanings. In the context of work or school, and as a contrast to the weekend, 'Wochentag' (weekday) means the days from Monday to Friday. When asking about a specific date, it refers to any of the seven days of the week.
EXAMPLE
The library is open longer on weekdays than on the weekend.
Correct preposition
When talking about events on a weekday, you use the preposition 'an' with the dative.
EXAMPLE
On a weekday, unfortunately I don't have time for a long trip.

Wochentag vs Datum
date
'das Datum' and 'der Wochentag' both describe a day, but not in the same way. 'das Datum' names the exact calendar date, for example May 12, 2026. 'der Wochentag' tells you which day of the week it is, for example Monday or Friday. Learners confuse these words because appointments often require both. The question 'Welches Datum?' asks for the day, month, and often year. The question 'Welcher Wochentag?' asks for Monday, Tuesday, and so on.
Wochentag
Tomorrow is a weekday, so the office is open.
Datum
Before the meeting, it is best to note down the date of the next appointment.
