The meanings “to make a sound” and “to whisper angrily” are standard language. The meanings “to drink quickly” and “to drive away quickly,” however, are very colloquial and should be avoided in formal situations.

Pfeifen and zischen can both describe sounds made by fast-moving air. Pfeifen usually sounds high and clear, while zischen sounds sharp and drawn out, like “sss.” The key difference is therefore the sound quality perceived.
