'Zurückschlagen' consists of 'zurück' (back) and 'schlagen' (to hit) and is separable. In a main clause, 'zurück' comes at the end; in a subordinate clause, the verb remains together. With the infinitive using 'zu', 'zu' goes between the two parts.
Nach dem ersten Schlag schlug sie zurück.
After the first blow, she struck back.
Er war überrascht, weil sie zurückschlug.
He was surprised because she struck back.
Sie versuchte, den Ball zurückzuschlagen.
She tried to hit the ball back.
When reacting to an attack, 'zurückschlagen' is often used without an object. In that case, the person who carried out the initial attack must be clear from the context.
Ein Zuschauer schlug den Spieler, doch dieser schlug nicht zurück.
A spectator hit the player, but the player did not strike back.
Common combinations are 'einen Angriff zurückschlagen' (to repel an attack) and 'den Feind zurückschlagen' (to repel the enemy). The accusative object names the attack or opponent being fended off.
Die Verteidiger konnten einen weiteren Angriff zurückschlagen.
The defenders were able to repel another attack.
With 'einen Ball zurückschlagen' (to hit a ball back), the direction or target is often added, for example with 'über das Netz' (over the net) or 'ins gegnerische Feld' (into the opponent's court).
Sie schlug den Ball weit ins gegnerische Feld zurück.
She hit the ball far back into the opponent's court.
For negative consequences, the pattern is 'etwas schlägt auf jemanden oder etwas zurück' (something backfires on someone or something). 'Auf' is followed by the accusative here; the action or its result is the subject.
Der Versuch, die Konkurrenz schlechtzumachen, schlug auf den Firmenchef selbst zurück.
The attempt to discredit the competition backfired on the company director himself.
