'Anspannen' (to tense / tighten) consists of 'an-' and 'spannen' (to stretch / tense) and is separable. In a simple main clause, 'an' appears at the end; in a subordinate clause, the verb remains together. With the infinitive preceded by 'zu' (to), 'zu' comes between the two parts.

For physical exercises, 'die Bauchmuskeln anspannen' (to tense the abdominal muscles), 'den Bauch anspannen' (to tense the abdomen), and 'den ganzen Körper anspannen' (to tense the whole body) are typical collocations. You can use 'leicht' (slightly), 'kräftig' (firmly), or 'bewusst' (consciously) to describe more precisely how the movement should be performed.

With 'anspannen' (to harness), the draft animal is in the accusative. The vehicle or machine can be added with 'vor' (in front of / to) and the accusative.

For the journey, the coachman harnessed a gray horse to the wagon.
When the whole person is meant, 'anspannen' (to tense) is used reflexively: 'sich anspannen' (to tense up). The reflexive pronoun is in the accusative and agrees with the subject.
