Usage tips
Participle as adjective
'Bearbeitet' (processed/edited) is the past participle of the verb 'bearbeiten' (to process/edit/work on). It is often used like an adjective and describes the result of an action: something is in a state after someone has worked on it.
EXAMPLE
Hier ist die bearbeitete Version des Dokuments.
Here is the edited version of the document.
Word structure
The word comes from the verb 'bearbeiten' (be- + arbeiten). The prefix 'be-' is inseparable and makes the verb transitive, so it always needs an accusative object: you always process/edit *something*.
EXAMPLE
Der Sachbearbeiter bearbeitet gerade meinen Fall.
The caseworker is currently processing my case.
Context: office & administration
In an administrative or bureaucratic context, 'bearbeitet' (processed) means that a responsible person or department is dealing with a matter. Typical nouns are 'Antrag' (application), 'Fall' (case), or 'Anfrage' (inquiry/request).
EXAMPLE
Ihr Visumantrag wird derzeit bearbeitet.
Your visa application is currently being processed.
Context: media & creative work
When talking about photos, videos, texts, or music, 'bearbeitet' (edited) means that they have been changed or improved. The adverb 'digital' (digitally) is often added.
EXAMPLE
Die Sängerin war mit der bearbeiteten Aufnahme ihres Liedes nicht zufrieden.
The singer was not satisfied with the edited recording of her song.
Context: crafts & materials
In a craft or manual-work context, 'bearbeitet' (worked/processed) refers to the physical alteration of a material. Typical nouns are 'Holz' (wood), 'Stein' (stone), or 'Metall' (metal).
EXAMPLE
Das bearbeitete Holz fühlt sich sehr glatt an.
The worked wood feels very smooth.

bearbeitet vs verändert
changed
'verändert' and 'bearbeitet' can both say that something is no longer exactly as it was before. 'verändert' is more general: it only says that something has become different. The reason for the change or the type of change is not always important. 'bearbeitet' is used when someone has actively worked on something, for example on a text, an image, a piece of music, or a material. So 'bearbeitet' sounds more targeted and more like a process of working on something. If you only mean the result, 'verändert' often fits. If you want to say that someone revised something or treated it technically, 'bearbeitet' is more precise.
bearbeitet
Das bearbeitete Foto ist heller als das Original.
The edited photo is brighter than the original.
verändert
Nach dem Umbau sieht das Wohnzimmer völlig verändert aus.
After the renovation, the living room looks completely changed.
