einchecken vs anmelden

to register / log in

'anmelden' and 'einchecken' both mean that you register somewhere or gain access. 'anmelden' is more general: you can sign up for a course, log in to a website, or officially register someone. 'einchecken' is used especially upon arrival, for example at a hotel, at the airport, or at an event. The words can be confused because checking in often also involves checking a registration. When it is about travel or arrival, 'einchecken' sounds more natural; in most other situations, 'anmelden' fits better.

Visual example for anmelden
einchecken

Nora checkt am Flughafen ein und gibt ihren Koffer ab.

Nora checks in at the airport and drops off her suitcase.
