To actively get involved in a situation or conflict in order to influence its course, prevent escalation, or bring about a change.
Als der Streit eskalierte, musste die Polizei eingreifen.

'Eingreifen' (to intervene/engage) is a separable verb with the prefix 'ein-'. In a main clause, 'greifen' stands in position 2 and 'ein' at the end. In a subordinate clause, 'eingreift' stands together at the end.

The verb is made up of 'ein-' and 'greifen' (to grab). The literal meaning 'hineingreifen' (to reach into) helps you understand the figurative meaning 'sich einmischen' (to get involved/interfere) or 'intervenieren' (to intervene).

When describing what one intervenes in, the preposition 'in' with the accusative is usually used. The pattern is: 'in eine Situation / einen Konflikt eingreifen' (to intervene in a situation / a conflict).

'handeln' and 'eingreifen' both mean that someone takes action. 'handeln' is more general: you do something, often because a situation requires it. 'eingreifen' is more specific and stronger. It means getting involved in an ongoing situation, problem, or conflict in order to change something or prevent something worse. If you only want to say that someone does something, 'handeln' fits. If someone actively gets involved in a situation and influences its course, 'eingreifen' is more natural.
Als der Streit lauter wurde, griff die Lehrerin sofort ein.
