Usage tips
Word formation
The verb is derived from the adjective 'möglich' (possible). The inseparable prefix 'er-' and the ending '-en' turn it into a verb with the meaning 'etwas möglich machen' (to make something possible).
EXAMPLE
Sein Stipendium ermöglicht ihm ein Studium im Ausland.
His scholarship enables him to study abroad.
Sentence structure with dative
'ermöglichen' (to enable) is very often used with a dative object. The dative object is the person for whom something is made possible: Someone (nom.) enables someone (dat.) to do something / enables something (acc.).
EXAMPLE
Meine Eltern haben mir den Führerschein ermöglicht.
My parents made it possible for me to get my driver's license.
Sentence structure with subordinate clause
Instead of an accusative object, a subordinate clause with 'dass' or an infinitive construction with 'zu' can also follow. In that case, 'es' is often used as a placeholder.
EXAMPLE
Das neue System ermöglicht es uns, effizienter zu arbeiten.
The new system enables us to work more efficiently.

ermöglichen vs bieten
to offer / to bid
'bieten' and 'ermöglichen' can both have to do with an opportunity or possibility. 'bieten' often says that something is available or provided: a course offers exercises, a city offers many possibilities. 'ermöglichen' places more emphasis on the fact that certain conditions are created so that something can really happen. The words can be confused because an offer sometimes also makes something possible. More precisely: 'bieten' describes what is there; 'ermöglichen' describes what becomes doable as a result.
ermöglichen
Flexible Arbeitszeiten ermöglichen den Eltern mehr Zeit mit ihren Kindern.
Flexible working hours enable parents to spend more time with their children.
bieten
Der Sprachkurs bietet viele Übungen für den Alltag.
The language course offers many exercises for everyday life.
