fake vs echt

real / really

'echt' and 'fake' are clear opposites here. You use 'echt' when something is original and has not been copied or imitated. 'fake' is used colloquially when something is forged, imitated, or only pretended. 'fake' sounds more modern and informal than 'gefälscht' (forged / counterfeit). In conversations about products, photos, news, or profiles, the difference can be important: either something really is the way it appears, or it is just fake.
