gefallen vs fallen

to fall

'fallen' and 'gefallen' look very similar, but most of the time they mean something different. 'fallen' usually means that something goes downward or that someone falls. In texts about war, 'fallen' can also mean that someone is killed in battle. 'gefallen' can mean almost the same thing in this war context, but it sounds more formal. Much more often, however, 'gefallen' means that something is beautiful or pleasant to someone. Then the person is in the dative, for example 'mir gefällt' (I like it / it pleases me). The risk of confusion is high because 'gefallen' also looks like a form of 'fallen'. So pay attention to the context and to the dative.
