This word is a compound of 'das Gesicht' (the face) and 'der Ausdruck' (the expression). The 's' in between is a linking element that connects the two words. Literally, then, it describes an expression of the face.

'der Blick' and 'der Gesichtsausdruck' can both show what someone feels or thinks. 'der Gesichtsausdruck' means the whole face, including the mouth, forehead, and cheeks. The words can be confused because a look can be part of a facial expression. When the eyes are important, 'Blick' is more natural; when the whole face is meant, 'Gesichtsausdruck' fits better.
