To receive something that is handed or offered to you. This meaning is formal and less commonly used.

'Hinnehmen' (to accept / endure) is a separable verb. The prefix 'hin-' comes at the end in a main clause, while in a subordinate clause and in the infinitive with 'zu', it remains attached to the verb.
Er nimmt die Entscheidung einfach so hin.
He simply accepts the decision as it is.
In the meaning of 'erdulden' (to endure), the verb is often combined with negative things. Typical phrases are 'Kritik hinnehmen' (to accept criticism), 'eine Niederlage hinnehmen' (to accept a defeat), or 'eine Ungerechtigkeit hinnehmen' (to accept an injustice).
Die Mannschaft musste eine schmerzliche Niederlage hinnehmen.

to accept / assume
When someone hands you an object, both „annehmen“ and „hinnehmen“ can express receiving it. „Annehmen“ is the normal choice and sounds neutral; „hinnehmen“ sounds formal and is rarely used in this meaning. In everyday speech, you should therefore usually use „annehmen“.
Die Ehrengästin nahm den überreichten Blumenstrauß feierlich hin.
