hinnehmen vs gefallen

to please / to fall

'sich etwas gefallen lassen' and 'hinnehmen' both describe not actively stopping something negative. 'hinnehmen' is somewhat more neutral and works well for decisions, problems, or bad news that you have to accept. 'sich etwas gefallen lassen' sounds more personal and often stronger: someone treats you badly, and you do not defend yourself. If you want to say that you simply accept a situation, 'hinnehmen' fits. If it is about setting a boundary in dealing with other people, 'sich etwas gefallen lassen' is more natural.

Visual example for gefallen
hinnehmen

Sie nimmt die Verspätung des Zuges ruhig hin.

She calmly accepts the train's delay.

gefallen

Die Schülerin lässt sich die unfairen Vorwürfe nicht gefallen.

The student does not put up with the unfair accusations.
