kritisch vs ernst

serious

'ernst' and 'kritisch' can both describe a situation as difficult or dangerous. 'ernst' generally says that something is important or worrying. 'kritisch' is especially appropriate when a situation is at an important point and can quickly get worse, for example with a patient, a project, or a technical problem. But 'kritisch' can also mean that someone judges something in an examining or skeptical way; then it is not the same as 'ernst'. The words can be confused because both occur with problems and dangers. Remember: 'ernst' describes the severity, while 'kritisch' often describes the decisive situation or a critical view of it.
