'Information' and 'Mitteilung' can both refer to something that someone finds out. 'Information' mainly emphasizes the content, meaning the knowledge or fact. 'Mitteilung' more strongly emphasizes that someone passes this content on to another person, orally or in writing. A 'Mitteilung' can also sound more official, for example in a letter or a message from a company. The words can be confused because a 'Mitteilung' often contains information. When the act of passing something on is important, 'Mitteilung' fits better.
