A limited, often spontaneous uprising or rebellion against an authority, usually on a smaller scale than a revolution.
example
Die hohen Brotpreise führten zu einer Revolte unter der armen Bevölkerung.
The high bread prices led to a revolt among the poor population.
Usage tips
Fixed preposition
A revolt is always directed against something or someone. Therefore, the noun is almost always used with the preposition 'gegen' (against) + accusative.
EXAMPLE
Es gab eine Revolte der Gefangenen gegen die schlechten Bedingungen.
There was a revolt by the prisoners against the poor conditions.
Typical verbs
Certain verbs are often used in connection with a revolt: 'eine Revolte anzetteln' (to start a revolt), 'eine Revolte niederschlagen' (to suppress a revolt), or 'zu einer Revolte führen' (to lead to a revolt).
EXAMPLE
Die Armee wurde gerufen, um die Revolte niederzuschlagen.
The army was called in to suppress the revolt.
Context clue
The context shows whether the literal or figurative meaning is meant. If it is about politics, history, or social groups, it is an uprising. If it is about art, fashion, or ideas, it is a protest against norms.
EXAMPLE
Die Studenten organisierten eine Revolte gegen die neue Hochschulreform.
The students organized a revolt against the new university reform.

Revolte vs Widerstand
resistance
'der Widerstand' and 'die Revolte' both have to do with rebellion against an authority or a rule. 'Widerstand', however, is more general: it can be quiet, long-lasting, and organized, for example politically or personally. 'Revolte' sounds stronger and often means an open, spontaneous uprising or a very clear protest. Learners may confuse the words because both are directed against something. As a guide: 'Widerstand' describes resisting in general, while 'Revolte' is more about the visible outbreak of this protest.
Revolte
Nach der neuen Entscheidung kam es unter den Mitarbeitenden zu einer kleinen Revolte.
After the new decision, there was a small revolt among the employees.
Widerstand
Der Widerstand gegen die Schließung der Bibliothek wächst seit Wochen.
Resistance to the closure of the library has been growing for weeks.
