'Ripper' is much more specific: it means a serial killer who mutilates his victims in a particularly cruel way. The word sounds stronger and is often used in crime fiction, the media, or historical references. The words can be confused because a 'Ripper' is also a serial killer. But not every serial killer is a Ripper.
