Usage tips
Word composition
The word consists of 'rück-' (back) and 'Schluss' (conclusion). A 'Rückschluss' (inference) is therefore a conclusion that one derives “backward” from facts or observations.
EXAMPLE
Seine Reaktion erlaubt den Rückschluss, dass er von dem Plan wusste.
His reaction allows the inference that he knew about the plan.
Typical collocations
'Rückschluss' (inference) is almost always used with the verb 'ziehen' (to draw). Another common combination is that facts 'zulassen' (allow) an inference.
EXAMPLE
Aus ihrem Schweigen konnte man keine Rückschlüsse ziehen.
No inferences could be drawn from her silence.
Correct preposition
When saying what the conclusion refers to, you use the preposition 'auf' with the accusative.
EXAMPLE
Ihre Kleidung lässt Rückschlüsse auf ihren Beruf zu.
Her clothing allows inferences about her profession.

Rückschluss vs Schluss
end / conclusion
'der Schluss' and 'der Rückschluss' can both mean a conclusion drawn from information. 'der Schluss' is more general here: you arrive at a judgment or result. 'der Rückschluss' is more precise and often sounds more factual. It means that you infer something else from a sign or an observation, for example a cause or a state. They can be confused because both have to do with thinking and drawing conclusions. If only the result is meant, 'Schluss' often fits. If you want to emphasize what something is derived from, 'Rückschluss' is more precise.
Rückschluss
Aus der langen Wartezeit lässt sich kein sicherer Rückschluss auf die Qualität der Praxis ziehen.
No reliable inference about the quality of the practice can be drawn from the long waiting time.
Schluss
Aus den vielen Fehlern zieht die Lehrerin den Schluss, dass die Aufgabe zu schwer war.
From the many mistakes, the teacher draws the conclusion that the task was too difficult.
