'Die Sanierung' is used much more often for buildings, apartments, districts, or companies. In medicine, 'Sanierung' is more specific and means, for example, that sources of disease are removed. Learners may confuse the words because both have to do with improvement. In everyday situations at the doctor’s office, however, people usually say 'Behandlung', not 'Sanierung'.
