The word is made up of three parts: the prefix 'um-' (change), the verb 'gestalten' (to shape, to design), and the ending '-ung' (turns the verb into a noun). So it literally means 'the process of reshaping'.

'die Veränderung' and 'die Umgestaltung' both describe something becoming different. 'Veränderung' is more general and can be large or small, planned or unplanned. 'Umgestaltung' is more specific: something is deliberately reorganized, replanned, or given a new form, for example a room, an organization, or a process. The words can be confused because every 'Umgestaltung' is also a 'Veränderung'. But not every 'Veränderung' is an 'Umgestaltung'. If something is simply different, you usually say 'Veränderung'. If something is being actively redesigned or restructured, 'Umgestaltung' fits better.
