'der Schüler' and 'der Student' both refer to people who are learning. The important difference is the place and type of education. A Schüler attends a school, for example a primary school, Realschule, or Gymnasium. A Student is enrolled at a university or college. Learners often confuse the words because some languages use the same word for both. In German, you say 'Schüler' for children and teenagers at school, and 'Student' for people at university.
