Usage tips
Word structure
The word is the opposite of 'durchsichtig' (transparent). 'Durchsichtig' itself comes from 'durch' (through) and 'Sicht' (sight/view). 'Undurchsichtig' therefore literally means that one cannot see through it.
EXAMPLE
Die Fensterfolie ist undurchsichtig und schützt vor neugierigen Blicken.
The window film is opaque and protects against prying eyes.
Context: materials
In its literal meaning, the adjective describes the property of physical materials. Typical nouns are 'Glas' (glass), 'Flüssigkeit' (liquid), 'Vorhang' (curtain), or 'Material' (material).
EXAMPLE
Die Wasserprobe war eine trübe, undurchsichtige Flüssigkeit.
The water sample was a cloudy, opaque liquid.
Context: unclear situations
The figurative meaning is used for abstract things that are difficult to understand. When it is about 'Motive' (motives), 'Pläne' (plans), 'Geschäfte' (business dealings), or 'Regeln' (rules), it means 'unclear' or 'mysterious'.
EXAMPLE
Die Finanzierung des gesamten Projekts ist für Außenstehende sehr undurchsichtig.
The financing of the entire project is very unclear to outsiders.

undurchsichtig vs klar
clear
'klar' and 'undurchsichtig' can be opposites, both for objects and for information. 'klar' means: you can see through something well, or you can clearly understand what is meant. 'undurchsichtig' means either: you cannot see through something, or: something is hard to understand and does not seem open. They can be confused because both are also used figuratively. With glass or film, it is about seeing. With plans, rules, or explanations, it is about whether you can understand what is really going on.
undurchsichtig
Der Vertrag wirkt undurchsichtig, deshalb liest Maria ihn noch einmal genau.
The contract seems unclear, so Maria reads it carefully again.
klar
Die Regeln für die Anmeldung sind jetzt klar formuliert.
The rules for registration are now clearly worded.
