vorne vs vor

before / in front of

'vor' and 'vorne' can both describe a position in the front area. 'vor' is a preposition and needs a reference point: something is 'vor dem Haus' (in front of the house), 'vor der Tür' (in front of the door), or 'vor mir' (in front of me). 'vorne' is an adverb and describes the position itself: someone sits at the front, something is at the front of the shelf. Learners can confuse the words because both seem spatially similar. Remember: 'vor' asks 'in front of whom or what?', while 'vorne' only says that something is at the front.

Im Kurs sitzt Mehmet gerne vorne, weil er die Tafel besser sieht.
