A room in a doctor's office, a government office, or a train station where people wait until they are called or their connection arrives.

'Wartezimmer' (waiting room) is a compound noun made from the stem of the verb 'warten' (to wait) and the noun 'Zimmer' (room). So it is literally a 'room for waiting.'

Pay attention to the case with the preposition 'in'. If you are located in the room, it is 'im Wartezimmer' (in the waiting room, dative). If you go into the room, it is 'ins Wartezimmer' (into the waiting room, accusative).

However, 'Wartezimmer' is used especially at doctors' offices, government offices, or similar places: you wait there until you are called. 'Aufenthaltsraum' is more like a common room, for example in a school, company, or clinic. There you can wait, take a break, or relax. Learners may confuse the words because people wait in both rooms. The purpose is what matters: being called or having an appointment with 'Wartezimmer', taking a break or spending time together with 'Aufenthaltsraum'.
