Usage tips
Word family
'Der Wert' (value) is the basis for the adjective 'wertvoll' (valuable) and the adverb 'wert' (worth). If something has a high value, it is worth a lot.
EXAMPLE
Diese Kette ist aus Gold und daher sehr wertvoll.
This necklace is made of gold and is therefore very valuable.
Plural as a clue
The plural form 'die Werte' is almost always used for moral principles or for measured data. The context then makes clear which of the two meanings is intended.
EXAMPLE
Unsere Firma hat klare Werte, die wir täglich leben.
Our company has clear values that we live by every day.
Fixed expression
The phrase 'Wert legen auf' is a fixed construction. It is always used with the preposition 'auf' and the accusative to express that something is important to someone.
EXAMPLE
Ich lege großen Wert auf Ehrlichkeit in einer Freundschaft.
I place great value on honesty in a friendship.
Typical verbs
To express a change in material value, the verbs 'steigen' (to rise), 'sinken' (to fall), 'gewinnen' (to gain), or 'verlieren' (to lose) are often used. The noun often appears with the preposition 'an'.
EXAMPLE
Das Haus hat in den letzten Jahren stark an Wert gewonnen.
The house has gained a lot in value in recent years.
Typical combinations
In scientific or medical contexts, 'Wert' is often combined with other nouns to form one word. Typical examples are 'Blutwerte' (blood values), 'Messwerte' (measurements/readings), or 'Grenzwerte' (limit values).
EXAMPLE
Die Messwerte zeigen eine deutliche Verbesserung der Luftqualität.
The measurements show a clear improvement in air quality.

Wert vs Preis
price / prize
'der Wert' and 'der Preis' can both have to do with money. 'der Preis' is the amount you have to pay when you buy something. 'der Wert' is more about how much something is really worth, for example because of its material, condition, or significance. The words can be confused because price and value are often similar. But they do not have to be the same: something can have a high value but be sold cheaply at the moment. When buying something, you ask about the price; when assessing an item, you are more likely to talk about its value.
Wert
Der Wert des alten Rings ist höher, als wir gedacht haben.
The value of the old ring is higher than we thought.
Preis
Vor dem Kauf vergleicht Mehmet den Preis in mehreren Geschäften.
Before buying, Mehmet compares the price in several stores.
