The recognition and positive evaluation of the qualities, performance, or value of a person or thing.

She showed her appreciation for his help with a small gift.
The word consists of 'Wert' (value) and 'Schätzung' (estimation). So it literally means to 'estimate/appreciate' the value of something. This can refer to emotional value (recognition) or financial value (assessment).
Die Schätzung des Wertes des alten Buches war überraschend hoch.
The estimate of the value of the old book was surprisingly high.
The context makes the difference: if people, feelings, or collaboration are being discussed, recognition is meant. If it is about experts, money, art, or real estate, the financial valuation is meant.
Er bekommt im Team viel Wertschätzung für seine Kreativität.
He receives a lot of appreciation in the team for his creativity.
When it is about recognition, 'Wertschätzung' (appreciation) is often combined with the verbs 'zeigen' (to show), 'ausdrücken' (to express), or the more formal 'entgegenbringen' (to show/extend).
Der Chef drückte seine Wertschätzung für die gute Arbeit aus.

Appreciation is directed 'für' eine Person oder Sache (for a person or thing; accusative) or is expressed with the genitive. A person can also 'genießen' Wertschätzung (enjoy appreciation/be held in esteem).

'der Dank' and 'die Wertschätzung' are both positive reactions to a person or an action. 'Dank' fits especially when someone has helped, given something, or shown kindness. 'Wertschätzung' is broader: you recognize the value, achievement, or qualities of a person. So you can show 'Dank' for specific help, but express 'Wertschätzung' for a person or their work. 'Wertschätzung' often sounds somewhat more general and lasting.
