Introduces a part of a sentence that makes a concession or states a fact, followed in the next part by a limitation or contrast, often introduced by 'aber' (but).
example
Der Kuchen schmeckt zwar gut, aber er ist sehr süß.
The cake admittedly tastes good, but it is very sweet.
Usage tips
Structure with 'aber'
'Zwar' (admittedly) almost always announces a contrast, which is usually introduced with 'aber' (but). When you hear or read 'zwar' (admittedly), expect a limitation in the second part of the sentence.
EXAMPLE
Ich habe zwar viel gelernt, aber die Prüfung war trotzdem sehr schwer.
I did study a lot, but the exam was still very difficult.
Word order
'Zwar' (admittedly) can stand in two typical positions. It either comes after the conjugated verb or in position 1, which then changes the word order in the sentence (verb in position 2).
EXAMPLE
Das Auto ist zwar teuer, aber es verbraucht wenig Benzin.
The car is admittedly expensive, but it uses little gasoline.
Word history
'Zwar' (admittedly) comes from Middle High German 'ze wāre', meaning 'in truth'. This origin helps explain why it introduces a fact ('It is true that...') before that fact is limited ('..., but...').
EXAMPLE
Er ist zwar ein guter Freund, aber manchmal ist er unzuverlässig.
He is admittedly a good friend, but sometimes he is unreliable.
Compare with
confusable
zwar vs aber
but
'aber' and 'zwar' often appear together, but they have different roles. 'zwar' prepares a concession: first you say something that is true. Then 'aber' introduces the more important limitation or contrast. Learners confuse them because both occur in the same sentence pattern. You normally say 'zwar ..., aber ...'. 'zwar' on its own often feels incomplete because a limitation is still expected.
zwar
Sie hat zwar den Bericht fertig, aber sie muss ihn noch einmal prüfen.
She has finished the report, but she still needs to check it again.
aber
Im Supermarkt gibt es die Jacke morgen günstiger, aber sie ist nur noch in einer Größe da.
The jacket will be cheaper at the supermarket tomorrow, but it is only available in one size now.
