Usage tips
Word composition
The word is made up of 'die Bahn' (railway) and 'die Station' (station). As with most compounds, the last word determines the article, here therefore 'die' from 'Station'.
EXAMPLE
Wir treffen uns an der kleinen Bahnstation am See.
We’ll meet at the small train station by the lake.
Important prepositions
To indicate a position, you say 'an der Bahnstation' (at the train station; dative). To express direction, you use 'zur Bahnstation' (to the train station; dative).
EXAMPLE
Der Zug hält nicht an jeder Bahnstation.
The train does not stop at every train station.
Word family
The component 'Bahn-' appears in many words related to the railway. Examples are 'der Bahnhof' (train station), 'der Bahnsteig' (platform), or 'das Bahngleis' (railway track).
EXAMPLE
An dieser Bahnstation gibt es nur ein einziges Bahngleis.
At this train station there is only a single railway track.

Bahnstation vs Bahnhof
train station
'Bahnhof' and 'Bahnstation' both refer to a place where trains stop and passengers get on or off. 'Bahnhof' is the normal everyday word and often means a larger facility with tracks, a building, ticket counters, or shops. 'Bahnstation' sounds more general and is more suitable for a smaller stop, or when you simply mean the stop along the line. The words can be confused because both are connected to train travel. As a practical rule: for most places, you can simply say 'Bahnhof'; 'Bahnstation' is more precise when you are talking about a small or rather simple stop.
Bahnstation
Die kleine Bahnstation liegt direkt neben dem Sportplatz.
The small train station is right next to the sports field.
Bahnhof
Vor dem Termin wartet die Familie am Bahnhof auf den Zug.
Before the appointment, the family waits at the train station for the train.
