Describes something that remains the same, stable, and without major changes over a longer period of time. It can refer to the weather, a person's character, or a relationship.

'Beständig' (steady/resistant) is related to the verb 'bestehen' (to continue/endure) and the noun 'der Bestand' (stock/existence). All these words contain the idea of duration and stability.

In the meaning 'widerstandsfähig' (resistant), '-beständig' is a very productive word element. It is attached to a noun to express what something is resistant to, e.g. 'hitzebeständig' (heat-resistant) or 'wasserbeständig' (water-resistant).

permanent / lasting
'dauerhaft' and 'beständig' both describe something that lasts over a longer period of time. 'dauerhaft' emphasizes that something is not only temporary. 'beständig' also emphasizes that something remains stable and changes little. It fits well with weather, relationships, character, or also with materials that can withstand something. A 'dauerhafte Lösung' (permanent solution) is meant to apply for a long time; a 'beständige Beziehung' (steady relationship) or a 'beständiges Material' (resistant material) remains stable despite external changes.

The paint is resistant to rain and sun.
