The word 'Card' rarely stands alone. Most often, it is part of a compound to describe the function of the card, e.g. 'Kredit-Card' (credit card), 'Kunden-Card' (customer card), 'SIM-Card' (SIM card), or 'Gift-Card' (gift card).

A very common fixed expression in retail is 'mit Card bezahlen' (to pay by card). This is a common alternative to the question 'Mit Karte?' (By card?).

Karte is the neutral everyday term for a plastic card used for payment, identification, or opening a door. Card refers to the same object, but sounds English and is more often used in product names or business advertising. Karte fits normal conversation, while Card is used in the corresponding brand name.
