'Card' is a loanword from English and in German is used almost exclusively for plastic cards in commercial contexts, for example for paying or as an ID.

The word 'Card' rarely stands alone. Most often, it is part of a compound to describe the function of the card, e.g. 'Kredit-Card' (credit card), 'Kunden-Card' (customer card), 'SIM-Card' (SIM card), or 'Gift-Card' (gift card).
Ich habe meine SIM-Card in mein neues Handy eingelegt.

A very common fixed expression in retail is 'mit Card bezahlen' (to pay by card). This is a common alternative to the question 'Mit Karte?' (By card?).

'die Karte' and 'die Card' can both mean a small piece of plastic used for paying, identification, or opening/access. 'Karte' is the normal German word and fits in many situations, for example with 'Kreditkarte' (credit card), 'Kundenkarte' (customer card), or 'Schlüsselkarte' (key card). 'Card' is borrowed from English and often sounds more modern or promotional. The words can be confused because they mean almost the same thing when talking about plastic cards and customer cards. In normal conversation, 'Karte' is usually more natural; 'Card' is more often heard in product names or offers.
