Usage tips
Word family
The word belongs to the word family around 'eigen' (own). The base is 'das Eigentum' (property). A person to whom something belongs is 'der Eigentümer' (male owner) or 'die Eigentümerin' (female owner).
EXAMPLE
Die Eigentümerin hat nachgewiesen, dass das Grundstück ihr Eigentum ist.
The female owner proved that the plot of land is her property.
Feminine form
The ending '-in' is used in German to form the feminine form of many professions and personal designations. Here it is added to the masculine form 'der Eigentümer' (the male owner).
EXAMPLE
Die neue Eigentümerin des Restaurants hat viele Änderungen geplant.
The new female owner of the restaurant has planned many changes.
Typical collocations
The word 'Eigentümerin' (female owner) is mostly used in connection with real estate or companies. Typical combinations are 'die Eigentümerin einer Wohnung' (the female owner of an apartment), 'eines Hauses' (of a house), or 'einer Firma' (of a company).
EXAMPLE
Wir müssen den Vertrag mit der Eigentümerin des Gebäudes besprechen.
We need to discuss the contract with the female owner of the building.
Use with the genitive
To describe what belongs to the person, the genitive is very often used. Alternatively, the preposition 'von' with the dative can also be used.
EXAMPLE
Die Eigentümerin des Geschäfts hat uns persönlich begrüßt.
The female owner of the shop greeted us personally.

Eigentümerin vs Herrin
mistress / lady
'die Herrin' and 'die Eigentümerin' can both refer to a woman who owns something or has control over it. 'Eigentümerin' is a factual and often legal word: it is about who owns a house, a plot of land, a company, or an object. 'Herrin' sounds less legal and instead emphasizes power, authority, or a special role, for example in the house or in relation to an animal. The words can be confused because both are connected with ownership. When it is about official ownership, 'Eigentümerin' is more precise.
Eigentümerin

Herrin
Die Katze hört nur auf ihre Herrin und ignoriert alle anderen.
The cat listens only to her mistress and ignores everyone else.
