'der Schwanz' and 'die Fahne' can both mean the rear body part of an animal. 'Schwanz' is the normal word for many animals, for example dogs, cats, or horses. 'Fahne' is used in this meaning only in hunting terminology, especially for the bushy tail of a fox. The words can be confused because both can fit with animals. In everyday language, however, 'Schwanz' is almost always more natural. 'Fahne' sounds technical here and does not fit every animal.
