Sentence structure and use
There are two important patterns: 'Der Fokus liegt auf' + dative describes the state. 'Den Fokus legen auf' + accusative describes the action of directing attention.

For a sharp portrait, you have to place the focus precisely on the eyes.

'das Zentrum' and 'der Fokus' can both mean that something is especially important or receives a lot of attention. 'Im Zentrum stehen' more often describes that a topic, a person, or a problem is the most important point. 'Fokus' emphasizes active attention more strongly: you deliberately direct your gaze or your work toward something. Learners may confuse the words because both have to do with attention. As a simple guide: something is 'im Zentrum' when it is important; something is 'im Fokus' when you are currently concentrating especially on it.
