The word 'Gefährt' is derived from the verb 'fahren' (to drive, to travel). The prefix 'Ge-' forms a collective or result noun here, similar to 'Gebäude' (building) or 'Gebirge' (mountain range). A Gefährt is therefore something that results from driving or traveling: a means of transport.
