The process of providing something with a sign, label, or inscription in order to identify it, classify it, or give information about it.

The word is derived from the verb 'kennzeichnen' (to label/mark). This verb is made up of 'kennen' (to know) and 'Zeichen' (sign). So a 'Kennzeichnung' (labeling/marking) is literally the attaching of a sign that one knows or is supposed to recognize.

The meaning depends on the context. If people are talking about the process, the action is meant ('Die Kennzeichnung dauert eine Stunde' — The labeling takes one hour). If they are talking about the result, the label itself is meant ('Die Kennzeichnung ist unleserlich' — The label is illegible).

Common combinations are 'gesetzliche Kennzeichnung' (legal labeling), 'freiwillige Kennzeichnung' (voluntary labeling), or 'Kennzeichnung von' (labeling/marking of) followed by what is being marked, e.g. 'Lebensmitteln' (food products) or 'Gefahrstoffen' (hazardous substances).

'das Zeichen' and 'die Kennzeichnung' both have to do with markings that provide information. 'Zeichen' usually means the symbol or marking itself. 'Kennzeichnung' can also mean the act of applying such signs, for example to goods, files, or devices. In addition, 'Kennzeichnung' often sounds more technical or formal and fits well with rules, products, and organization. The words can be confused because a 'Kennzeichnung' often consists of a 'Zeichen'. If you only mean the symbol, use 'Zeichen' rather. If it is about labeling, marking, or identifying something, 'Kennzeichnung' fits better.
