'testen' sounds more precise and often more systematic. You check whether something works, is good, or has certain properties. 'testen' is also used for medical examinations. Learners may confuse the words because both have to do with trying something out. When it is about a personal attempt, 'versuchen' often fits. When you are checking or inspecting something, 'testen' is more natural.
