Describes an action or event that follows something previously mentioned in time or results as a direct consequence of it.
Er verpasste den Zug und kam daraufhin eine Stunde zu spät zur Arbeit.
He missed the train and, as a result, arrived at work an hour late.
The word consists of 'dar-' (a form of 'da') and '-hin'. 'Dar-' refers to a previously mentioned situation, and '-hin' expresses the consequence or result. So it literally means 'as a consequence of that'.
Die Straße war gesperrt. Daraufhin mussten wir einen Umweg fahren.
The road was closed. As a result, we had to take a detour.
'Daraufhin' is a conjunctive adverb. When it stands at the beginning of a sentence, the conjugated verb follows immediately (inversion). It can also appear in the middle of the sentence after the verb and the subject.
Daraufhin änderte er seine Meinung.
Thereupon, he changed his mind.
This adverb is used mainly in written language and in formal contexts. It often sounds somewhat more formal and detached.
Der Angeklagte legte ein Geständnis ab und wurde daraufhin zu einer milderen Strafe verurteilt.
The defendant made a confession and was thereupon sentenced to a milder punishment.

'dann' and 'daraufhin' can both show that something happens after another event. 'dann' is general and can simply name the next step in a sequence. 'daraufhin' is more specific: it often says that the second action is a reaction to, or direct result of, the first. That is why learners may confuse the words when two events happen one after the other. If only the order is important, 'dann' fits. If someone reacts to something, or something happens because of the previous event, 'daraufhin' is more natural.
