Introduces a main clause that describes the result or consequence of a previously mentioned reason. It means 'for this reason' or 'that's why.'
Ich habe schlecht geschlafen, deshalb bin ich heute sehr müde.
I slept badly, therefore I am very tired today.
When 'deshalb' (therefore) stands at the beginning of a main clause, the conjugated verb follows directly in second position. The subject then moves to the third position. This word order is called inversion.
Der Zug hatte Verspätung, deshalb kam ich zu spät zur Arbeit.
The train was delayed; therefore, I arrived late to work.
The word is made up of 'des' (genitive of 'der/das') and the old word 'halb' (meaning side, direction). Literally, it therefore means something like 'from this side' or 'for this reason.'

She did not pass the exam and is therefore very sad.
'Deshalb' (therefore) does not always have to stand at the beginning of a sentence. It can also be placed after the verb to emphasize the consequence less strongly. In this case, there is no inversion.

'und' and 'deshalb' can both stand between a reason and a result. 'und' only connects the information in a general way; the result may become clear from the context. 'deshalb' explicitly names the result and means 'for this reason'. They can be confused when one sentence after another shows a consequence. If the reason is important and you want to make the result clear, 'deshalb' is more precise. If you are only linking two statements, 'und' is enough.
Amira ist heute krank, deshalb bleibt sie zu Hause.
Amira is sick today, so she is staying at home.
