'Genehmigung' (approval/permit) is derived from the verb 'genehmigen' (to approve). The ending '-ung' forms nouns from verbs. All nouns ending in '-ung' are feminine and have the article 'die'.

'Zustimmung' and 'Genehmigung' can both mean that someone allows something or agrees to something. 'Zustimmung' is more general and can also be a personal opinion: someone says yes to a suggestion. 'Genehmigung' sounds more formal and often comes from a responsible person, a company, or an authority. You can confuse the words when permission is involved. For ordinary agreement or consent, 'Zustimmung' fits; for official permission, 'Genehmigung' is a better fit.
