Usage tips
English loanword
'Trailer' is a word from English that has been fully adopted into German. It is used with a German article ('der') and German grammar.
EXAMPLE
Hast du den neuen Trailer schon gesehen?
Have you already seen the new trailer?
Context clue
The two meanings are very different and become clear through context. Words like 'Film' (film), 'Kino' (cinema), or 'anschauen' (to watch) point to the film preview, while 'LKW' (truck), 'transportieren' (to transport), or 'beladen' (to load) refer to the truck trailer.
EXAMPLE
Der Trailer zum neuen Superheldenfilm ist online.
The trailer for the new superhero film is online.
Typical verbs
In connection with a film preview, the verbs 'sehen' (to see), 'anschauen' (to watch), or 'veröffentlichen' (to release/publish) are often used. People also say that a trailer 'läuft' (is running/playing).
EXAMPLE
Vor dem Hauptfilm liefen drei interessante Trailer.
Before the main film, three interesting trailers played.
Typical verbs
When the truck trailer is meant, typical verbs are 'ziehen' (to pull), 'ankoppeln' (to couple/attach), 'beladen' (to load), and 'entladen' (to unload).
EXAMPLE
Der Fahrer muss den Trailer noch mit Paletten beladen.
The driver still has to load the trailer with pallets.

Trailer vs Anhänger
supporter / trailer / pendant
'der Anhänger' and 'der Trailer' can both mean a vehicle without its own engine that is pulled. 'Anhänger' is the normal German word and works for many sizes, for example for a car trailer or a bicycle trailer. In transport contexts, 'Trailer' is more likely to be used for a large trailer or semi-trailer. Very often, however, 'Trailer' means something completely different: a short promotional film for a movie, series, or game. That is why the words can be confused. When you are talking about a towed vehicle in everyday life, 'Anhänger' is usually the safe choice; for movie previews, you only say 'Trailer'.
Trailer
Habt ihr den neuen Trailer zu dem Film schon gesehen?
Have you already seen the new trailer for the movie?
Anhänger
Für den Umzug hat Herr Schneider einen Anhänger gemietet.
