Usage tips
Word family
'Nutzen' (use/benefit) is the basis of a word family around 'use' and 'advantage'. These include the noun 'der Nutzen' (the benefit/advantage), the adjective 'nützlich' (useful/helpful), and the noun 'die Nutzung' (the use/usage).
EXAMPLE
Der persönliche Nutzen dieser App ist für mich sehr hoch.
The personal benefit of this app is very high for me.
Use with accusative
When you actively use something in order to achieve an advantage, the thing you use is always in the accusative. The structure is: subject + 'nutzt' + object in the accusative.
EXAMPLE
Er nutzt jede freie Minute, um Deutsch zu lernen.
He uses every free minute to learn German.
Typical collocations
In the meaning of 'to use', 'nutzen' is very often combined with abstract nouns. Typical phrases are 'die Zeit nutzen' (to use the time), 'eine Chance nutzen' (to take/use an opportunity), or 'die Gelegenheit nutzen' (to use the opportunity).
EXAMPLE
Sie hat die Chance genutzt und sich für den Job beworben.
She took the opportunity and applied for the job.
Sentence structure: asking about the point
In the meaning of 'to be beneficial', 'nutzen' is often used in the question 'Was nutzt es...?' (What good is it...?). The person who benefits—or does not benefit—is in the dative.
EXAMPLE
Was nutzt mir das schönste Wetter, wenn ich arbeiten muss?
What good is the most beautiful weather to me if I have to work?

nutzen vs helfen
to help
'helfen' and 'nutzen' can both express that something is good or helpful for someone. 'helfen' is used very often when one person supports another, or when a remedy works against a problem. 'nutzen' means either that you use something, or that something brings an advantage. This can easily lead to confusion. 'Ich helfe dir' means support. 'Das nutzt dir' means: It brings you an advantage. Also important: 'etwas nutzen' usually means 'to use something', not 'to help someone'.
nutzen
Der Tipp nutzt mir bei der Vorbereitung auf das Gespräch.
The tip helps me prepare for the conversation.

Nach der Nachricht hilft Paul seiner Nachbarin beim Ausfüllen des Formulars.
