Adjutant vs Stellvertreter

deputy / representative

'Stellvertreter' and 'Adjutant' can both refer to people who work close to a leader. The difference lies in their role. A 'Stellvertreter' is allowed to officially represent another person and take over their duties when they are absent. An 'Adjutant' supports a higher-ranking person as a close aide, especially in the military, or figuratively as a right-hand man. So he helps, but does not necessarily replace the person. The words can be confused because both work alongside an important person. If someone officially takes over, 'Stellvertreter' fits. If someone supports and organizes, 'Adjutant' fits.
