'Jährlich' (annual/yearly) is derived from 'das Jahr' (the year). The ending '-lich' forms adjectives from nouns, as also in 'der Tag' (the day) → 'täglich' (daily) or 'der Monat' (the month) → 'monatlich' (monthly).

'Jährlich' (annual/yearly) can stand before a noun as an adjective or function as an adverb describing how often something happens. As an adjective it is declined; as an adverb it remains unchanged.

Common combinations are 'jährliche Kosten' (annual costs), 'ein jährlicher Umsatz' (annual revenue), 'eine jährliche Prüfung' (an annual inspection/exam), or 'das jährliche Treffen' (the annual meeting).

year-old / year-long
'jährig' and 'jährlich' look very similar, but they do not mean the same thing. 'jährig' is almost always used with a number. It says how old someone or something is, or how many years something lasts. 'jährlich', on the other hand, means that something happens once a year or applies for one year. Learners can easily confuse the words because both have to do with 'Jahr' (year). A simple guide is: with a number and age or duration, 'jährig' usually fits; for repetition every year, 'jährlich' fits.
